Rig Of The Month – The Jika Rig

By Joe Mole

The Jika Rig is an ideal rig for targeting fresh and saltwater species like wrasse, bass, perch and pike, especially if you want to use some slightly larger lures or creature baits. The ease of assembly for this rig is simple as you only need a few components, a weedless hook, split ring, drop shot weight and the soft plastic of your choosing.

The hook is attached to the split ring, as is the dropshot weight that will sit just underneath the eye of the hook, and then you will tie your leader to the top of the split ring. Simply pick the lure you would like to use and attach it to the hook and you are set. With this being said, a good set of split ring pliers is a must to save your fingernails.

Because of customisation, you can easily tune this rig for targeting specific or different sized fish, and can be done so very quickly as long as you are carrying the correct components.  Either having some pre-made or doing it on location isn’t going to eat into your fishing time.

The slim profile of this rig makes it ideal for bouncing around rocks and slightly more snagged areas, while also maintaining a horizontal profile of the lure. It is also very effective with floating lures, such as those available from Zman.

It’s definitely a fun rig to play around with to find that perfect fit for your current fishing situation.
